Black Sabbath es una banda de heavy metal formada en 1968 en Birmingham, Inglaterra y pioneros de géneros como el heavy metal, el doom metal y el stoner metal. Sus integrantes originales fueron Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler y Bill Ward. Es considerada una de las bandas más influyentes en la historia del Rock.
El amplio legado que dejó Black Sabbath hacia la ruptura a finales de la década del 70, no ha pasado desapercibido. Tanto así que bandas de la talla de Motorhead, Judas Priest, Pantera, Megadeth, Soundgarden, Slayer y Metallica, principalmente, comentan haber tomado ese heavy oscuro, opresivo, duro y que a todas luces, ya desligaba de sus contemporáneos. Sus composiciones que entornaban atmósferas siniestras y demoníacas, anuncios apocalípticos, hicieron que Black Sabbath quedara relevado a un segundo plano ante la masiva popularidad de sus contemporáneos Led Zeppelin o Deep Purple. Pero el legado del Metal Sabbath ejercieron un poderoso magisterio sobre la mayoría de artistas y grupos en las subsiguientes décadas (Iron Maiden y Judas Priest en mayor grado), al tiempo que aportaba características que se convertirían en definitorias del heavy metal. Evidencia de ello son los numerosas versiones de estas últimas.
